Clinical Impact of Cystatin C/Cathepsin L and Follistatin/Activin A Systems in Breast Cancer Progression: A Preliminary Report.

2016

This study was directed to assess the clinical impact of the circulating cathepsin L, cystatin C, activin A, and follistatin in breast cancer patients. The serum concentrations of these molecules were determined by immunoenzymatic assays, and their association with some clinico-pathological parameters of breast cancer progression was evaluated. Our results identified cystatin C and activin A as predictive markers for the presence of breast cancer and bone metastasis, respectively. Therefore, these proteins may have a clinical role as circulating biomarkers in the diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of breast cancer patients.

Use of three-dimensional ultrasonography for the study of normal and pathologic morphology of the human embryo and fetus: preliminary report.

1995

Our objective was to determine whether three-dimensional ultrasonography offers advantages over two-dimensional sonography for the evaluation of normal and pathologic morphology of human embryos and fetuses at various stages of pregnancy. Our studies suggest that small fetal and embryonic malformations are better defined with 3D sonography. Our experience indicates that 3D sonography allows more detailed visualization of fetal internal structures. We believe that with technical improvements 3D sonography will permit a more complete evaluation of fetuses earlier in gestation than is possible with current 2D sonographic instruments.

Combined evaluation of resting IGF-I, N-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) and C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collag…

2004

To verify whether combined measurements of GH-dependent parameters might be useful in detecting exogenous recombinant GH (rGH) administration in male athletes from different disciplines.Sixty-six athletes (control group) were sampled for the evaluation of resting IGF-I, N-terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) and telopeptide type I collagen (ICTP). Cut-off values (mean + 2 SD) for IGF-I, PIIINP and ICTP were calculated and arbitrary scores (1.5, 2.0) were assigned to abnormal parameters. By using the sum of individual parameter scores, positive (or = 3) or negative (3) scores were obtained. In addition, a subgroup of six athletes was treated for 3 weeks with rGH (0.09 IU/kg b…

New mesh shape and improved implantation procedure to simplify and standardize open ventral hernia repair: a preliminary report.

2010

Introduction Issues in ventral hernia repair are represented by the need for mesh fixation and how to assure a sufficient mesh overlap of the defect. Aiming to resolve these problems, this study describes a modified technique for ventral and incisional hernia repair based upon a newly developed mesh with a special design. This new type of implant allows broader coverage of the abdominal wall and results in tension- and fixation-free repair. Materials and methods A unique geometrically shaped mesh consisting of a large central body and radiating arms was used to repair ventral or incisional hernia. The mesh was intended not to be point-fixated. The friction of the straps passing through the …

The rates of co-occurring behavioural addictions in treatment-seeking individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a preliminary report

2020

Objectives: To assess the rates of co-occurring putative ‘behavioural addictions’ in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: Twenty-three international centres specialising in the treatment of OCD were invited to participate in a survey of the rates of behavioural addictions and other relevant comorbidity within their samples. Results: Sixteen of 23 (69.6%) invited centres from 13 countries had sufficient data to participate in the survey. The use of validated diagnostic tools was discrepant, with most centres relying on a ‘clinical diagnosis’ to diagnose behavioural addictions. The final sample comprised of 6916 patients with a primary diagnosis of OCD. The reported rat…

Glycated albumin as a glycaemic marker in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and anaemia: a preliminary report.

2019

BACKGROUND: The association between glycated albumin (GA) and glycaemic status has not been fully described in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) in relation to anaemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between GA and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c in patients with advanced CKD and to evaluate the influence of anaemia in such relationship. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CKD stage 4 or 5 were included in the study. eGFR was calculated by the CKD-EPI creatinine equation. Plasma GA was measured by an enzymatic method. RESULTS: Eighty-one patients were included in the study, 46 (57%) were males; the mean age was 67 ± 14 years. HbA1c was corre…

Moderate hypofractionated helical tomotherapy for localized prostate cancer: preliminary report of an observational prospective study.

2019

Objective: To report preliminary findings of a phase II study exploring the clinical outcomes of moderate hypofractionated radiotherapy performed with helical tomotherapy (HT) using computed tomography–magnetic resonance imaging–based planning for localized prostate cancer. Methods: The phase II prospective study received ethics approval from our institutional ethics committee. A dose of 60 Gy/20 fractions for low–intermediate risk prostate cancer by means of HT was explored. Primary endpoints of the study were acute and late gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicities. Secondary endpoints were quality of life and biochemical-free survival. Results: A total of 35 patients were i…

Are we confident that final‐year medical students know at least basics about diabetes?: A preliminary report from the multicenter, survey‐based Diabe…

2021

Abstract Background We present the results of the pilot study of a multinational “Diabetes Know‐Me” project investigating knowledge regarding diabetes of medical students. This is the first collaborative project of the ISPAD JENIOUS group. Methods Students of the final year of medical studies from six countries answered a 25‐question survey regarding basic knowledge concerning diabetes (1091 surveys handed out, response rate 86%). Results Among the responders (58% female) 90% confirmed attending diabetology classes; 11% planned to specialize in diabetology. There were significant differences between countries in the median score of correct answers ranging from 10/25 to 22/25. Attending diab…
